TKAM Post #3

Journal #3
Chapter 8-9
Perspective: Ms. Maudie Atkins

Dear Diary,
This week has been a very interesting one indeed. First of all, old Mrs. Radley died. It was a very sad day. I know that a lot of people thought that Mr. Radley had killed her. Just like he stabbed his father. But then again, this all speculation. People just need to learn to stay to their own business, and let the Radleys have theirs. Just because they isolate them selves, doesn't mean they're bad people!

Then, it snowed! It hasn't snowed like this in Maycomb county since 1885. It was terrible! It froze a lot of my flowers, and I had to a lot of work to get my flowers to stay nice. They almost froze over! I had to wrap all of them in burlap sacks, hoping that they would keep um from freezing to death. Old Jem finch was being a real dear and took all of the snow. They made a snowman across the street. It at first looked like Mr. Avery. It even looked cross. Then they had a funny idea, and stole my hat and pliers, and made it look like me! I was debating whether or not to get mad, but then I thought it was actually very sweet.

Then that night, my house caught on fire! I don't know exactly what happened, I'm a little perplexed about it.It was a real fright. I felt sad that I had to wake everybody up with the commotion. Every body was a real help with getting all of my furniture out in time. Even some people I was not acquainted with were there. Mr. Avery even had to jump out of the window to save my mattress! It felt like so much trouble for me. Everybody in our town was out there helping fight the fire. It was even spreading to the adjacent houses. Maybe I should have been more careful with my flames! I'm not too sad that my house burnt down, though. It was taking up so much of my space! Now I'll have plenty of more room to put my flowers!

Scout was later talking about things that happened after the fire. One, was that she got into a fight with a boy at school about him calling her father a "nigger lover". I felt that was a silly thing to say. Just because he defends black men in court, doesn't mean he's a bad man!

Another thing she talked to me about was her Christmas experience. She says that she doesn't think of Christmas as an extremely good thing, because she has to deal with her grand-cousin Francis. She really doesn't like that boy, he says things to her like "nigger-lover". Yet again, I don't see the problem with that. She even got into a fight about it. It's sad that she had to get in trouble, but she does need to be less violent.
