"The doctor there advised my parents to quickly take the boys back to their own doctors in the United States" Haitian Doctor, Page 96
When the doctor suggested that they go back to get treated by American doctor, it showed something about those doctors. It shows how in a country like Haiti, they don't have technology like other countries in the U.S.. This shows one of the reason many immigrants may come to the U.S.. Medical treatment. Their well being is a big defining factor for many people deciding to change countries.
This doesn't say something about this one doctor. It shows something about all of the doctors in countries like Haiti. They're afraid that they won't be able to preform as well as American doctors.
Question #1: Why do you think the doctors were afraid to treat something as small as a baby's case of diarrhea?
Quote #2 "As my head bobbed up and down, I felt my old life slipping away. I was surrendering myself, not just to a country and a flag, but to a family I'd never really been a part of." Edwidge, page 106.
This one paragraph shows how some moving immigrants may have a different thought about becoming a citizen of another country. It show how they may not feel happiness, but saddness. Edwidge in this pararaph has second thoughts of becoming an American. It's almost alien to her. It shows how it may feel better to stay in your country.
The way Edwidge has shown that she may want to stay in Haiti shows her loyalty to her family.
Even though her father and mother may live in the U.S., and they are her true family, she still acts as if her uncle in Haiti is her real family.
Question 2: How would you feel if your parents left you for a better oppurtunity? Would you feel that they would be not as good of a family as the ones who acted like your true family?
